The Benefits of Ethical Leadership Eugenie Francis Monroe College Abstract Ethics begins with the individual, so it would be fair to say that ethical leadership is defined differently by each person in accordance with his or her values. However, there are guidelines that shape the thoughts and actions of most ethical leaders to think, speak and act in accordance with their ideals. This paper examine the role of effective leadership and the decisions that they make, as well as, the influence they have throughout the organization, as a whole. The importance of understanding how good leadership can influence others and bring about change. The Benefits of Effective Leadership We all make decisions every day;†¦show more content†¦In many instances, we think that we are being above board and fair but actually we are not because of how self-interest operates. For example, when self-interest is present we â€Å"typically biases the emotional importance we place on information, which makes us readier to perceive the patterns we want to see† (Campbell, Whitehead, Finkelstein, 2009, p.3). Similarly, distorting attachments is another issue that causes moral decisions made by ethical leaders risky. Some leaders are too attached to the firm and because of this they make irrational decisions that causes the organization to lose billions of dollars because of their lack of judgement. Example, ethical leaders that show signs of distorting attachments, â€Å"can become attached to people, places, and things, and these bonds can affect the judgments they form about both the situation we face and the appropriate actions to take† (Campbell, Whitehead, Finkelstein, 2009, p.3). Additionally, misleading memories or prejudgments are very powerful and because everyone have done it at some point in their lives it may seem to society that the decisions made are ethical. However, when you are a leader of an organization, the costs involved in sticking to prejudgments decisions can be disastrous.
